Explanations of the most important scar terms

Cuts are caused by sharp, smooth objects. This may be a knife or a broken glass or the sharp edge of a piece of paper. A cut usually passes through all layers of the skin and leads to a small but deep wound.

Particularly long or deep cuts need to be treated by a doctor and may possibly require stitches. But smaller wounds also need to be cleaned and covered properly so they can heal.
