Explanations of the most important scar terms

Atrophic scars

Atrophic scars are slightly sunken due to a lack of collagen. The scar covers the wound but not enough tissue is produced to fill out the damaged area sufficiently.

Atrophic scars are particularly common on the face or back after acne or chickenpox. Another possible cause is overstretching of the skin, for example due to sport. Some people also have a genetic tendency to atrophic scarring.
